Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson “hopes to play” in Sunday’s road game against the Jacksonville Jaguars, according to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler.

Fowler described Richardson as “dealing with a hip injury on a daily basis” after he left the team in the first quarter of Sunday’s Week 4 game against the Pittsburgh Steelers with an injury.

On Wednesday, Stephen Holder of ESPN reported that Richardson was “feeling much, much better” heading into the Colts’ first practice in Week 5.

Fowler noted that veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, who threw two touchdowns and no interceptions in his relief appearance against the Steelers, has “no illusions” he will play if Richardson is healthy.

Richardson returned to the field after his first exit from the game, only to take another hit before leaving the game for good.

He returned to the field in the second quarter, but did not step in to replace Flacco, and after the victory he told reporters that he felt “just a little pain.”

NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe initially described Sunday’s injury as a “right hip indicator,” while the network’s Tom Pelissero reported Monday that Richardson was “on a day-to-day basis” with strained obliques and abdominal muscles.

The Colts have not yet confirmed the exact nature of Richardson’s injury.

Steichen told reporters before Wednesday’s practice that Richardson would “probably” participate “on a limited basis.”

The head coach added that the “plan” is for Richardson to play on Sunday and that the quarterback could potentially start even if he doesn’t practice in the days leading up to the contest (with Kevin Bowen of Indianapolis 93.5 and 107.5 Fan.)

Bowen, however, noted that Richardson has yet to make an NFL appearance after a week of missed or limited practice.

So far, Richardson’s NFL career has been largely defined by injuries. The No. 4 has only made four starts in his 2023 debut season, missing three of them early, including a contest during which he suffered a season-ending shoulder injury.

The quarterback’s participation in Wednesday’s training will be the first sign of whether he may be missing time for the second season in a row.
