Ranking the top 10 point guards heading into the 2024-25 NBA season

Heading into the 2024-25 season, the Charlotte Hornets are counting on a productive campaign from their young All-Star, LaMelo Ball. With Ball now wearing ankle braces and surrounded by a more complete lineup, the team’s success depends on his ability to stay healthy and lead. But where does he rank among the NBA’s elite?

Dončić remains a generational talent. His triple-double averages of 33.9 points, 9.2 rebounds and 9.8 assists propelled the Mavericks to the NBA Finals. At just 25 years old, Luka’s all-around dominance cements his position as the best defender in the league.

Shai’s 30.1 points per game on 53.5% shooting led the Thunder to dominance in the regular season. His elite play, including great defense (2.0 steals per game), makes him one of the most complete players in the league.

Even at age 36, Curry’s shooting remains lethal and he continues to warp defenses with his presence. Curry, who is averaging 26.4 points and 5.1 assists, makes the Warriors dangerous, and his three-point efficiency makes him among the most dangerous point guards in the league.

Brunson improved his game in New York, scoring 28.7 points per game, leading the Knicks all the way to the playoffs. His shooting ability and leadership on the court have made him a fan favorite, and with the addition of Karl-Anthony Towns to the team, Brunson’s role will become even more important.

Haliburton’s departure and leadership took the Pacers to new heights last season. With an average of 20.1 points and a league-high 10.9 assists last season, his play is among the best in the league. He is a true general who has prepared the Pacers for future success.

The potential for LaMelo Ball to have a breakout season is enormous. Last season, he had 23.9 points, 8.0 assists and 5.1 rebounds per game, which showed his dynamic ability to influence the game. His shooting percentage of 35.5% from three and 1.8 steals reflects his versatility. With better health and a stronger team around him, Ball is ready to take the Hornets to the next level and prove he’s among the best.

With a healthy season, LaMelo Ball has a chance to climb even higher in the rankings. While he currently looks like the third-best point guard in his draft class, Ball has shown flashes of brilliance that few young stars possess. His unique skill set, love for the game and new ankle braces give him an advantage over the likes of Damian Lillard, Cade Cunningham and Jamal Murray entering this season. If he can stay on the field, Ball will quickly remind the league of his All-Star season.
