The Red Sox could land a $19 million All-Star, which is an underrated fit

The Red Sox could land a million All-Star, which is an underrated fit

If the Boston Red Sox want to make the playoffs in 2025, they will need to sign at least one or two starting pitchers this winter.

Boston will enter the 2025 campaign with starting spots Tanner Houck, Brayan Bello and Kutter Crawford. The Red Sox will also likely have Lucas Giolito as an option in the starting rotation once he presumably agrees to a deal.

The Red Sox will enter the offseason looking to add some pitching and may look to free agency or the trade market. There will be plenty of options, and top options like Blake Snell and Corbin Burnes are the players who have made the most headlines. But these are not the only players who will appear there.

There will be plenty of cheaper options that could help, and one underrated player to consider is Kansas City Royals hurler Michael Lorenzen. The one-time All-Star started the 2024 season with the Texas Rangers and was traded to Kansas City. Overall, he finished the regular season with an ERA of 3.31 in 26 appearances, including 24 starts.

Lorenzen was an All-Star in 2023 and spent time with the Detroit Tigers and Philadelphia Phillies. He could be a defensive option for the Red Sox and is expected to sign a contract worth $19 million over two years.

If he is indeed available for $19 million, Boston should be willing to make the deal. Especially if they can’t hit an ace like Snell or Burnes.
