The Muhammad Ali Center will reopen on October 2

The Muhammad Ali Center in downtown Louisville will reopen Wednesday, two weeks after a large fire damaged an adjacent parking lot and sent smoke into the building, the center announced in a Facebook post Monday.

None of the center’s artifacts were damaged in the Sept. 18 fire, but the HVAC system and tiles on the side of the building near the parking garage were damaged.

Louisville Fire Department, Louisville Metro Police and the River City Parking Authority responded to the morning blaze.

“We were truly grateful that none of the exhibits … were harmed,” Ali Center spokeswoman Annie Moore said at a Sept. 25 news conference. “All our emergency systems worked exactly as they should. We are very grateful to the services that helped bring the fire under control.”

Last week, more than 100 contract workers cleaned ceilings, floors and walls in exhibition spaces, offices and other areas.

The “Free Community Day,” which the center had postponed due to fire cleanup, has been rescheduled for Oct. 13 and will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The event will “commemorate Latino Heritage Month and the incredible talent of Latino artists.”
