NBA players’ new home for the start of the season

NBA players’ new home for the start of the season

The NBA is back.

With the start of the league’s annual “Day” all 30 teams resumed their daily basketball activities. From Media Day through each training camp, players slowly gain strength as they work to get back into playing shape.

However, a new season awaits some famous faces, in which they will look for a fresh start in new environments and places. Let’s take a look at these players and how their potential fits with their new teams and teammates.

Russell Westbrook breaks new ground in Denver

Russell Westbrook begins a new season with the 2023 champions following his career with the Clippers. Westbrook looks to energize a Nuggets team that is missing another championship piece in the Kentavious Caldwell-Pope game. With the loss of Reggie Jackson, he immediately steps into the game as Denver’s backup PG, and the team could also use him to play with the starters and allow Jamal Murray to slide into the second spot. Westbrook will also be working with fellow triple-double specialist Nikola Jokic, and it will be interesting to see two high-IQ players on the court.

PG13 forms a big three with Embiid and Maxey

This was probably the biggest transfer of the offseason. George immediately joined the Sixers, forming a big three with Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey. At 34 years old, PG probably still has a good three years of great form left in him, but he could be in a great situation when Embiid and Maxey were at their peak. George is in a position where he’s not being asked to take on a lot of the offense like he has been for most of his career, and he can play to his strengths – a two-piece winger with some playmaking changes and be a secondary creator and a scorer for Maxey and Embiid. George is also a very good three-point shooter on field and catch-and-shoot attempts, which should bode well for both Sixers superstars in keeping them spaced off the floor. Overall, the signing was an A+ for Sixers general manager Daryl Morey, and now it’s all about health as Philly tries to put everything together to finally make it to the conference finals under Embiid.

CP3 in San Antonio as PG Wemby; Harrison Barnes is a veteran of the young Spurs team

Victor Wembanyama finally gets his first PG in the form of Chris Paul. After playing much of last year without a legitimate playmaker, Wemby and Spurs are adding one of the best to ever do it at the position. Even as he approaches the age of 40, Paul should still have plenty of time left to try and develop the young but hungry Spurs as best he can. On the other hand, Barnes adds another veteran element and San Antonio looks to improve and at least play this season.

Caruso and Hartenstein add more defensive strength to an already elite OKC lineup

Imagine having to add two role-playing players to a team that finished a season ago at the top of the conference, all without losing anyone important from that core. That’s exactly what the Oklahoma City Thunder did when they added Alex Caruso and Isaiah Hartenstein to their team. This move further strengthened their position in the West, with rising stars Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren improving each year and MVP candidate Shai Gilgeous-Alexander just starting his career. Caruso adds another defensive bull on the perimeter, which already features fellow All-Defensive player Lu Dort, while Hartenstein provides frontcourt versatility to likely play alongside Holmgren. The Thunder are once again poised to make a deep playoff push, and it all starts with offseason acquisitions and fitting in with the team.

Klay splashing and hitting the floor for Luka, Mavs

The second Splash brother is bringing his show to Dallas after spending his first 13 years with the franchise. Thompson immediately fills a need in Dallas to help maintain space on the floor and be a decoy for Luka Doncic on his plays on the court. At his age, Thompson won’t be asked much like he was in Golden State, which could rejuvenate his career as he finds a new environment with the Mavericks.

DeMar DeRozan as the latest piece to Sacramento’s playoff success

DeRozan enters the Kings’ den as one of the best players in the league and will play alongside a player of the same caliber in DeAaron Fox. It will be interesting to see how DeRozan’s style of play fits into the Kings’ offense, where their movement offense is based on three-point shooting with Domantas Sabonis at the helm, and a major issue will be how coach Mike Brown integrates him into the game in a certain way. The Kings are one of the rising teams in the West, and adding a player like DeRozan gives them another dimension on offense.

Dejounte Murray and Tyus Jones will solve PG problems in NOLA, PHX

Two teams that had PG issues last season finally addressed that problem by signing two high-quality PGs in the league today: Murray to the Pelicans and Jones to the Suns. Murray plays the role of the Pelicans’ primary shot creator, playmaker and scorer. This was a significant low for the Pelicans last season, especially in the playoffs with none other than CJ McCollum (who is aging) and Brandon Ingram shooting and creating plays. Murray steps in immediately and fills that void, and with Zion Williamson returning, the Pelicans enter the season optimistic about their playoff chances.

On the other hand, Jones also fills an immediate need for a PG, someone who can make plays for others without turning the ball over. Jones has one of the best, if not the best assist-to-turnover ratio in the league, and the way Phoenix’s lineup is constructed allows their three high-scoring three: Bradley Beal, Devin Booker and Kevin Durant to do their thing. and focus on what they do best. Jones comes in to calm these guys down and put them in the best position to succeed.

Buddy Hield and Kyle Anderson bring seasoned veterans and immediate positional needs to Golden State

A few key veterans who have joined the Warriors include Hield and Anderson, who continue to strengthen their lineup around superstar Stephen Curry. Hield will try to replace Klay Thompson’s production after his departure with dead-eye shooting and distance for Curry. Hield also performed well off the ball, which should bode well for Golden State’s offensive play. Meanwhile, Anderson brings his big forward, almost center-playing style to the Warriors and should fit right in as a Draymond Green clone. Anderson has the playmaking chops and basketball IQ to play smoothly at Kerr’s level, and he seems to understand how to play with and beyond the skill set of a player like Curry.

The Prince-Trent-Wright trio comes to Milwaukee to win

Taurean Prince, Gary Trent Jr. and Delon Wright signed up for a little less than they should have and signed with the Bucks for a chance to contribute to a championship contender. All three are exactly what the Bucks need in their game plan as they are expected to have shooting, spacing and strong perimeter defenders. Milwaukee’s offense is expected to be centered around superstars Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, so these guys can’t be expected to do more and can simply focus on what they do best as players in the league.
