Matt Ryan discusses the issues in Trevor Lawrence’s game.

It’s been a rough start to 2024 for the Jacksonville Jaguars, but especially for starting quarterback Trevor Lawrence.

The former No. 1 pick signed the biggest contract in franchise history this offseason, which came with the highest expectations of his four-year career. As a result, the former Clemson Tigers star became a source of criticism in the national media after the Jaguars started 0-4.

Ahead of the Jaguars’ Week 4 game against the Houston Texans, former Atlanta Falcons quarterback and league MVP Matt Ryan explained why he thinks Lawrence is off to such a slow start.

“Apart from all the other things he deals with and the shots he catches in the media during the week. On the football side, it was inaccurate, wasn’t it,” Ryan said during the CBS Sports pre-game broadcast.

“It was inaccurate from 5 to 20 yards. This is where you play quarterback. You have to hit in the middle phase of the passing game. It doesn’t look mechanical to me. This looks like confidence. This is clearly a problem for the coach.

Lawrence rushed for multiple touchdowns for the first time this season in a loss to the Texans, but he also led the offense to just seven points in the fourth quarter and missed two potential passes to Christian Kirk and Brian Thomas Jr.

As long as the Jaguars continue to struggle in the red zone and at the end of games in the final quarter, Lawrence will continue to make tackles. And this time it’s coming from someone who recently was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL.

“You have to be at your best in the fourth quarter as a quarterback,” Ryan said Sunday.

“But when you have a guy who’s in a slump, he needs some downtime, too. In the first quarter, in the second quarter you have to build some continuity. Ultimately, it all depends on him. He needs to look into this. mirror and must recover.
