Longshore workers began an indefinite strike Tuesday that is expected to impact cargo operations in the eastern United States.

JaxPort said in a press release that it is “closely monitoring the situation regarding the International Longshoremen’s Association’s contract with the United States Maritime Alliance and we remain in close contact with terminal operators that rely on ILA labor.”

“We expect the strike to impact approximately one-third of JaxPort’s business, particularly the international container volume handled by SSA Jacksonville, as well as the international vehicle volume.”

A workers’ strike could have a negative impact on the supply of a wide range of goods in grocery stores and other retail stores. Here’s what you should know about it:

Does the docker strike affect JaxPort?

According to Chelsea Kavanagh, JaxPort’s director of communications, two-thirds of JaxPort’s business, including the majority of cargo from Puerto Rico, will continue as normal.

None of JaxPort’s 172 direct employees are members of the ILA, which means all employees directly employed by JaxPort will continue to work.

Why are dockers on strike?

The ILA’s demands include wage increases, according to Monday’s ILA press release. Striking workers will also have to reach an agreement on the use of automation.

When did the dockers strike start?

The contract between the ports and the ILA officially expired at midnight on October 1, causing the union to go on strike for the first time since 1977.

Where is the longshore workers’ strike taking place?

The strike is taking place in 36 ports along the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico coasts.

On the East Coast, affected ports include Baltimore; Boston; Charleston, South Carolina; Jacksonville; Miami; Houston; Cell, Alabama; New Orleans; New York/New Jersey; Norfolk, Virginia; Philadelphia; Savannah, Georgia; Tampa, Florida; and Wilmington, Delaware.

How many dockworkers are on strike?

45,000 workers were expected to take part in the strike.

How will the longshoremen’s strike affect Jacksonville?

The supply chain for incoming goods will be stopped on the East Coast, which could cause problems getting products to stores, as well as higher prices as more imports will have to be shipped to the West Coast before reaching Florida and surrounding areas.

Will the dockers’ strike affect prices?

The ILA strike could cost the economy as much as $5 billion a day and upend holiday shopping. The prices of various goods, especially perishable goods, are expected to increase.
