Is the Jacksonville Jaguars’ inability to finish games a sign of a larger problem?

The Jacksonville Jaguars are 0-4 and have beaten themselves as badly as their opponents have beaten them.

While the Jaguars never had much of a chance against the Buffalo Bills on Monday Night Football, they had a chance to win virtually every other game they lost this season.

Against the Miami Dolphins earlier in the season and the Houston Texans last Sunday, the Jaguars could find a way to win. However, they suffered two heartbreaking losses on their way to becoming the last winless team in the National Football League.

Coach Doug Pederson thinks it’s fair to ask why the Jaguars are struggling to close out games. Pederson said he and his coaching staff often talk to players about finishing plays and plays until the final whistle.

Pederson said he explained to the team the importance of closing out games.

“Yes, that’s a great question because the things I tell them often end up being the end,” Pederson said. “Especially in sports, right? You have to finish, you have to finish the game, you have to finish the series, the quarter, the half, ultimately the match. In fact, yesterday was our failure, it was the end of the game. In attack, we didn’t stay on the pitch, we rolled over to the third goal to stay on the pitch.

– Then, defensively, we couldn’t get off the pitch. Even though the defense played great in the second half – I think it was five passes and five punts – there was one play where we couldn’t get off the field and make enough plays there. These are again the things that are stopping us from winning these games.

Regardless of who is to blame for a team’s problems, solving the problem usually falls to the head coach. So far, Pederson hasn’t done that for a variety of reasons that may or may not be his fault. This means that at 0-4 there must be some sort of disconnect between Pederson and the team. It is much easier to replace a coach than talented players.

Our SI Jaguars writer John Shipley requested 15 minutes to meet and discuss the future of the franchise with general manager Trent Baalke.
