The company announced that the mobile phone outage that affected Verizon customers in Michigan and across the country on Monday has been fully restored and returned to normal levels after several hours of outage.

“If you continue to experience issues, we recommend restarting your device,” Verizon said in an email to the Free Press just before 8 p.m. “We know how much people rely on Verizon, so we apologize for any inconvenience. Thank you for your patience.”

Verizon customers in metro Detroit reported service problems this morning as part of a larger, nationwide connectivity problem that the wireless company said began around 9 a.m. and lasted for several hours.

Some customers reported that they were unable to make or receive calls but could send text messages.

In addition to how many customers were reporting issues, Downdetector also offered maps showing where reports were coming from. Verizon’s network outages occurred throughout the Midwest, including Chicago, Indianapolis, Minneapolis, Omaha and Nebraska, according to the website.

Other major cities experiencing connection issues include Atlanta, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle and Phoenix.

What is the status of SOS?

Many of the affected phones displayed “SOS Only” in the phone’s status bar or SOS icon, which meant the devices were not connected to a cellular network but could still make emergency calls for safety reasons in the United States and Canada.

SOS, now an abbreviation for Emergency, used to mean “save our souls” or “save our ship” in the days of Morse code.

Downdetector, an outage tracking website, showed customers reporting outages around 9 a.m., and by 11 a.m. the number of customers had climbed to over 100,000, although the number was decreasing and was approaching 20,000 by 5 p.m.

Later, the Federal Communications Commission, the agency that regulates wireless companies, said on social media that it “knows the Verizon outage is impacting customers in some parts of the country” and is “working to determine the cause and extent of these service interruptions.”

At around 5 p.m., the telco announced on social media that “engineers are making progress in resolving the issue with our network and service restoration has begun” and apologized “for any inconvenience some of our customers have experienced today.”

But for safety, Ford Field, where the Lions were scheduled to play the Seahawks, urged fans on social media to access their e-tickets via Wi-Fi before arriving and download them to a mobile wallet on their phone to ensure the “most seamless entry” stadium.

Verizon did not say what caused the outage or how many customers were affected.

Some speculated that the outage mainly affected newer phones.

Search trends have shown that many people are checking Google to find an answer to why their service is not available. The Downdetector website also identified customers of other carriers, including AT&T, T-Mobile and US Cellular, who also reported service outages around the same time, but in much smaller numbers.

Verizon also offered its own outage map.

The company said that to check for Verizon outages, its customers must be logged in to the website, but users should be able to search for troubleshooting information, report problems, and obtain a ticket number and estimated time for repair completion.
