FIFA Club World Cup 2025 in New Jersey: What you need to know

Football fans received good news on Saturday when FIFA announced the locations of the 2025 Club World Cup.

For those of us who only watch the sport during international tournaments and may get lost in the details, this tournament is different from the FIFA World Cup that will be held in New Jersey in 2026.

It will feature club teams – professional teams from leagues around the world – and not national teams.

During Saturday’s Global Citizen festival in Central Park, FIFA officials, with the help of famous guests, confirmed that a tournament in which 32 teams will take part will be held at 12 stadiums across the country, and the final set will be played on Sunday, July 13, in New York New Jersey, which means MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

In addition to the Meadowlands, there are four stadiums that are doing double duty, hosting matches for the 2025 and 2026 tournaments. They are in Atlanta, Miami, Philadelphia and Seattle.

The other two cities that competed with the Garden State for the privilege of hosting the 2026 finals, Dallas and Los Angeles, are not among the 2025 host cities.

What did FIFA representatives say?

MetLife’s 2026 FIFA World Cup Host Committee co-chairs Bruce Revman and Lauren LaRusso said they are “excited that another major soccer tournament is coming to our region” and while they are not “directly associated with FIFA we are planning a Club World Cup in 2025 , will be “cheering on the sidelines and offering our support to the teams at FIFA and MetLife Stadium.”

“We are keen to incorporate any learnings into our plans for FIFA World Cup 26 and know that a successful FIFA Club World Cup will further heighten regional and global excitement in 2026,” they said.

Spokeswoman Natalie Hamilton said Gov. Phil Murphy is also delighted because “by combining the 2026 FIFA World Cup final with the 2025 Club World Cup final, the Garden State will host some of the most important soccer matches in history.”

The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, which is responsible for the Meadowlands complex that includes the stadium, will provide support such as fire and emergency services, but the contract for the tournament itself is between MetLife and FIFA, in line with the format of concerts and other sporting events taking place at the stadium.
