Colts announce practice squad addition at RB

The Indianapolis Colts announced Tuesday afternoon that they have made two additional practice squad moves, signing quarterback Trent Pennix and releasing kicker Spencer Shrader, an appropriate move to create space.

This trade comes on the heels of several deals made by the Colts on Tuesday morning, including Tyquan Lewis being placed on IR, Adam Gotsis being added to the 53-man roster and cornerback Kelvin Joseph being added to the practice squad.

Pennix is a familiar face for the Colts. Last April, he went undrafted out of North Carolina State and signed with the Colts, where he spent the offseason and part of training camp.

Pennix played in the first preseason game against Denver, where he was injured. A few days later, Pennix was waived/injured to make room for Demetric Felton, whom the Colts claimed on waivers.

Although listed as a running back, Pennix played hard in college, filling a variety of roles, including lining up throughout the formation, and impacting the game as a blocker, pass catcher, and even ball carrier, making 41 career tackles.

Schrader, an undrafted 2024 rookie, spent training camp and the preseason with the Colts. He remained on the practice squad with Matt Gay, who was dealing with a hernia injury earlier in the season, and was an active participant in the Colts’ Week 1 matchup against Houston, during which Schrader made all three of his extra point attempts.

With Gay fully healthy, the Colts see no need to carry an additional kicker on the practice squad.
