Can you pass the Maryland 8th grade math test?

Can you pass the Maryland 8th grade math test?

Can you find the area of the cylinder? Add exponential numbers? Solve a system of equations?

Eighth graders in Maryland should know how to do all this and more. However, the latest round of state test scores show that very few of them achieve this. Just 7% of test takers passed the state’s eighth-grade math test, part of Maryland’s Comprehensive Assessment Program.

One big caveat: Scores on this test can be deceptively low because many eighth-graders take advanced math classes like Algebra I and the corresponding test; the pass rate for this test is higher – 17%.

Still, poor performance in eighth grade worries state education officials, who are calling for higher quality math teaching and supports to close the gap between students’ current levels and the skills they should have.
