Bills’ Von Miller suspended 4 games by NFL for violating personal conduct policy

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) – Buffalo Bills running back Von Miller was suspended for four games by the NFL on Tuesday for violating the league’s rules of conduct.

The NFL did not disclose the reason for the suspension, which comes as Buffalo (3-1) prepares for Sunday’s game against the Houston Texans. Miller, the NFL’s active sack leader, could rejoin the Bills ahead of their Nov. 3 home game against Miami.

Miller was charged last November for attacking his pregnant girlfriend at their home outside Dallas during the Bills’ bye week. He turned himself in to police after being charged with third-degree assault on a pregnant woman, which carries a sentence of two to 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

The woman and Miller have been in a relationship for seven years and have two children together.

No charges were brought. Miller said in July that based on his attorneys’ opinions, he considered the case closed.

“My life now is solely focused on football and my children and being the best teammate and the best player I can be,” he said at the time. “I’m happy to be here with the Buffalo Bills. I’m happy to be in the moment, live my life and do the things we usually do.

Miller, 35, has three sacks in four games this season. After tearing a knee ligament last season, he didn’t score a single goal in 14 games, including the playoffs.

Miller has 126 1/2 sacks, which puts him tied for 17th on the career list with Derrick Thomas.

In Miller’s initial comments about his December arrest, he disputed the allegations, calling them false and “exaggerated.” Miller indicated that something happened between him and his girlfriend, but emphasized that it had no connection with what he allegedly did.

According to a police affidavit regarding the alleged assault that occurred on Nov. 29, Miller twice put his hands around his girlfriend’s neck, pulled out her hair and threw her on the couch. Officers wrote that the woman was treated for minor injuries, including bruises on her neck.

Police wrote that Miller “visibly became angry” when the woman entered the office in their shared apartment and slammed the door behind her.

Miller then told her to “get out,” police wrote, and when she tried to get her laptop and cellphone, Miller began pushing her. She repeatedly shouted, “Stop. “I am pregnant,” the statement said. After being pushed, she fell into a chair and Miller placed one hand around her neck and held her tightly for three to five seconds, police wrote.

The document says Miller then threw the woman’s laptop on the floor and stomped on it. She told police she recorded part of the attack and when she threatened to call the police, he left.

The Bills filled Miller’s roster spot by acquiring defensive end Zion Logue from the Atlanta Falcons practice squad. Logue was drafted in the sixth round by Atlanta after playing in college at Georgia.
