A 13-year-old robbery suspect was mistakenly released from a Seattle detention center

Seattle police arrested a 13-year-old boy for trying to steal a 12-year-old’s bicycle at knifepoint in West Queen Anne, but he was mistakenly released from the King County Juvenile Detention Center the next day.

According to the Seattle Police Department, the incident occurred on September 27 when officers responded to a robbery in the 1900 block of First Avenue West.

After interviewing the victim and reviewing surveillance footage, the police determined that the suspect had attempted to commit a robbery on the premises of a local junior high school.

Officers were able to locate the suspect’s home, and a multilingual officer fluent in Brazilian Portuguese helped communicate with the boy’s family.

The teenager was arrested and booked into the Judge Patricia H. Clark Child and Family Justice Center on robbery charges.

However, on September 28, detention officers released the boy by mistake.

Without a court-issued arrest warrant, police could not arrest him again.

Regardless, the boy still showed up for his first court hearing on Monday, where the court found probable cause for the attempted robbery.

The case has been handed over to detectives from the Robbery Unit, who are continuing the investigation.
