5-year-old and man shot on Detroit’s west side. The police are checking whether the incidents are related

A 5-year-old was shot in the leg on Detroit’s west side on Tuesday evening, and a man claiming to have been injured in the same incident is under investigation.

Detroit police aren’t sure if the two incidents are related, but say a child was shot this evening at 9300 Plainview near W. Chicago on the city’s West Side.

At about 5:45 p.m., a patrolling scout car heard gunshots, said DPD Deputy Chief Jacqueline Pritchett. Shot Spotter then detected shots fired in the Plainview area, and when police arrived, they found spent shell casings at the scene.

“While they were here, information came out that a 5-year-old had been shot in the left leg and turned over to Henry Ford Fairlane,” Pritchett said. “The five-year-old was shot dead at the scene.”

While officers were investigating, word went out over the radio that a black man had arrived at the DPD station and had been shot in the right arm.

“He also claims that he was there when he was shot,” she added. “At this time we do not know if these two scenes are related. The scene is very fluid.”
