Local owner-pilot, volunteer, helps Helene

COLUMBUS, Ga. (WRBL) — Millions of people face a long road to recovery after Hurricane Helene tore through the Southeast. The local owner-pilot turns on the throttle and takes flight to lend a helping hand.

Helene marks one of the worst storms in U.S. history, leaving in its wake a desolation of shattered homes, flooded streets and a death toll that now tops 100.

Hurricane damage covers at least 10 states. Winds in some places range from 100 to 20 miles per hour, storm surges up to 5 feet and record flooding.

Joe Biden, President of the United States

Columbus’ owner-pilot saw the widespread destruction on social media and knew he had to respond.

I started seeing these images and thought, “Man, this is really bad.” That’s when I started thinking, how can I get involved? That’s how I came across Operation Airdrop.

Micah Messer, owner-pilot

Messer volunteers with Operation Airdrop, a Texas-based nonprofit organization that organizes aviation assets after natural disasters. Covers travel costs, including fuel and accommodation. Messer will be heading near Asheville, North Carolina.

In the state alone, more than 400 roads remained closed over the weekend as floodwaters began to recede and revealed the extent of the damage.

Water, food and other supplies arrive in Asheville and are also airlifted from there to surrounding counties.

Governor Roy Cooper, North Carolina (Germany)

When Messer became a pilot, he knew the day would come when he could use his love of flying to help others.

I told my wife that if I ever get the opportunity, I could use it in good roles like Pilots for Christ and Paws. There’s another one where you can fly animals and/or help with natural disasters. If I can, I will take the opportunity.

Messer has a message for others at one of the most exclusive clubs in the country.

Less than 1 percent of the population has and currently holds a private certificate to fly. Even a smaller group of pilot-owners who actually own their own aircraft and can use it for these types of operations. To those who are out there and have their own plane, who are pilots and can spare the time, use the talent that God has given you for this short period of time. You are such a small part of the population, but there are many people who need it.

Messer expects to carry water, food, diapers and even medical supplies in his 1968 Piper Cherokee.
