Jared Goff and Jahmyr Gibbs lead the offense

The Detroit Lions exorcised the demons of yesteryear with a prime-time win over the Seattle Seahawks.

Detroit’s offense gained momentum en route to a season-high point total. When all was said and done, the Lions defeated Seattle 42-29 for their first victory over their NFC West nemesis since 2012.

Here are the photos and duds from Detroit’s victory over Seattle

STUD: QB Jared Goff

Goff literally had a perfect performance from a completion perspective, finishing the game 18-for-18, the best mark in NFL history without an incompletion. He also became the first player in league history to finish a game with at least 200 passing yards and a touchdown.

The experienced playmaker caught a pass from Amon-Ra St. Brown on a trick play in the third quarter, marking his first career touchdown. While he did take three sacks, including a costly safety, it was largely a stellar performance by Goff.

DUD: CB Terrion Arnold

After Monday’s win, Arnold was penalized three more times, and his tendency to effectively play against opposing receivers became a bit concerning. In four games, Arnold was penalized nine times.

He continued to have good moments as a running back on Monday, and adjusting from a collegiate level to competing against the league’s best wingers for four weeks was never going to be easy.

However, Arnold still has trouble keeping his hands off his receivers. He wasn’t alone in his penalty issues, as fellow defender Carlton Davis was also penalized three times, including twice for pass interference.

STUDENT: WR Jameson Williams

Williams only had two catches, but both of them counted. After making a 10-yard catch early in the game, Williams had his big moment with a 70-yard touchdown catch in the third quarter. While playing, he caught the intersection that was marked by Amon-Ra St. Brown, running a deep route on the opposite side of the field.

The Alabama product created so much separation that he was able to cover the final 30 yards to the end zone. Williams then hit the ball into the post in tribute to Calvin Johnson, who was inducted into the Pride of the Lions team at halftime.

In addition to Williams’ efforts as a pass catcher, Williams was also praised by Dan Campbell for his efforts as a blocker in the run game.

DUD: DE James Houston

With Marcus Davenport and Derrick Barnes on the bench with injuries, Monday’s game was an opportunity for Houston to play a bigger role. However, he made little impact and distinguished himself with a double penalty.

Houston was in an offside position twice. He didn’t record a tackle, but he put pressure on Geno Smith on one snap. The Lions were able to sack Geno Smith three times. In one case, Levi Onwuzurike and Alim McNeill connected, DJ Reader picked up another and linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez made a second tackle.

STUDENT: LB Jack Campbell

Campbell took an important step early in Monday’s game. After the Lions scored to take a 7-0 lead, Seattle tried to tie the game. However, Campbell changed those plans by punching the ball away from Seahawks receiver DK Metcalf.

Campbell forced a fumble that was recovered by Carlton Davis and returned deep into Seattle territory. The Lions converted and went up 14-0 three plays later.

The Iowa product finished with seven tackles, including one for a loss.

STUDENT: RB David Montgomery

Montgomery wasn’t Detroit’s top player, but he had plenty of big moments. He started the offense on the second series, starting with an 11-yard run and ending with a 1-yard dash into the end zone.

The highlight of his night, however, came in the third quarter. After receiving a short pass from Goff in the flat, he hit cornerback Devon Witherspoon’s shoulder, avoided multiple tackles and ran for a 40-yard gain, his longest reception of the season.

WELL: S. Kerby Joseph

Once in safety, Joseph took a big step. He continued his solid play to start the 2024 season with a team-high nine tackles, including one for a loss.

The Illinois product recorded his third interception of the season, picking off Smith in the end zone on Seattle’s final drive. He also had a tackle for loss after Jack Campbell forced Kenneth Walker to bat his run out of tackles and was able to fill the lane.

STUDENT: RB Jahmyr Gibbs

While Montgomery had the highlights, Gibbs provided a constant presence on the ground. He finished with a team-best 78 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 14 carries.

The Alabama product had scoring runs of three and one yards. He also ran for 20 yards to help Detroit score its first touchdown of the game.
