Just a few weeks ago, as players began returning to Memphis for the start of the new season, rookie Jaylen Wells was walking through Cordelia’s Market on Mud Island when a fan approached him for a photo.

“Hi, my name is John,” said the man with a hat covering the front of his face. “I’m a huge Grizzlies fan. Do you mind if I take a photo of you?

Herrington: The Grizzlies felt like underdogs last season. They are ready to turn the page.

Wells, happy to be recognized, agreed to the photo and took it. He was minding his own business when, just a few moments later, Mitch, the cashier, had to come by to give him the news.

“He said, ‘You know who you just took a picture with, right?’” Wells said.

“I wrote back and said, ‘I don’t know.’ John?

“He said, ‘No. This is your teammate, John Konchar.”

It was a perfectly executed joke. And if Mitch hadn’t said anything, there probably would have been a second funny locker room interaction a day later.

But this could be the perfect media story that captures the essence of the Memphis Grizzlies’ preseason.
