Commanders are climbing, Jaguars are at the bottom

Commanders are climbing, Jaguars are at the bottom

Week four of the 2024 NFL season is already behind us. For the second week in a row, there were a lot of results that no one could have predicted. That’s why it’s the NFL, right? No one can ever predict how it will turn out.

The league’s top teams are starting to separate themselves from the bottom league teams. However, there is confusion inside the league when it comes to talent levels, production and rankings.

Ranking after four weeks should be easy enough, but right now it’s not quite right. A lot changes every week. Injuries have a lot to do with it, but the “every Sunday” mentality has helped many teams get into serious trouble.

Heading into Week 5, here are my updated NFL power rankings:

Players

1. Kansas City Chiefs (last week: 1)

2. Detroit Lions (last week: 3)

3. Houston, Texas: (Last week: 4)

4. Baltimore Ravens (last week: 12)

5. Minnesota Vikings (last week: 6)

6. Buffalo Bills (last week: 2)

7. San Francisco 49ers (last week: 9)

8. Tampa Bay Buccaneers (last week: 8)

The Kansas City Chiefs, who were 4-0, were number one all season long. The teams right after them were in constant motion, but many of the same teams were struggling. The Baltimore Ravens bounced back with a win over the Buffalo Bills. Lamar Jackson reflects on his MVP form, which is good news for the Ravens. After a stunning 0-2 start, they seem to be making a comeback.

This lowers the bill a bit, but we know they will be competitive all year round. They are up there with the Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49ers and Houston Texans as elite teams that play there year-round. Both the Minnesota Vikings and Tampa Bay Buccaneers were included in this part of the list and were not eliminated. There was no flash in the pan like we might have seen with the Los Angeles Chargers or New Orleans Saints. Minnesota and Tampa are good and could stay that way all year long.

Bands to watch

9. Pittsburgh Steelers (last week: 5)

10: Philadelphia Eagles (last week: 7)

11. Seattle Seahawks (last week: 11)

12. Atlanta Falcons (last week: 14)

13. Washington Commanders (last week: 23)

14. Green Bay Packers (last week: 13)

15. Dallas Cowboys (last week: 20)

16. Indianapolis Colts (last week: 21)

17. Cincinnati Bengals (last week: 24)

18. Los Angeles Chargers (last week: 15)

19. Chicago Bears (last week: 22)

20. New York Jets (last week: 10)

21. New Orleans Saints (last week: 16)

At this level anything can happen. All of these teams have talent and make it difficult to play against them every weekend. Do they have enough to compete for when the playoffs begin? Well, those who succeed believe that they can do it. As we’ve seen in previous weeks, several of these teams have the tools to climb into contender status for some time to come. There’s a lot to unravel as the year progresses, but none of them are in any danger of being relegated to the next level either.

One of the surprising teams here is the 3-1 Washington Commanders. Jayden Daniels has been amazing and his team is winning games because of him. Will they maintain their lead over the NFC East all year long? It may be unlikely, but they look dangerous in week five. As for the Chicago Bears, they were in danger of being relegated to the minor leagues, but they defeated the Los Angeles Rams. Caleb Williams seems to be able to handle the offense and the defense is top five. Don’t be surprised if they keep popping up as the season goes on.

A lot to prove

22. Cleveland Browns (last week: 18)

23. Arizona Cardinals (last week: 19)

24. Los Angeles Rams (last week: 17)

25. Denver Broncos (last week: 25)

26. Las Vegas Raiders (last week: 26)

27. New York Giants (last week: 28)

28. Tennessee Titans (last week: 31)

29. Miami Dolphins (last week: 29)

30. New England Patriots (last week: 27)

31. Carolina Panthers (last week: 32)

32: Jacksonville Jaguars (last week: 30)

This level is full of teams that are already focused on getting the best possible pick in the 2025 draft. Nothing is impossible, but these teams mostly intend to stay at the same level for the rest of the season. Only the Cleveland Browns and Los Angeles Rams have what it takes to dig themselves out of this hole they dug themselves. As for Los Angeles, if they get a little healthier as they go forward, they will improve their record.

Theoretically, the Miami Dolphins could also be a good team if they got Tua Tagovailoa back, but that may not happen again this year. As for their AFC Florida teammate, the Jaguars, they seem to be in the same mess they were in before Trevor Lawrence. Will Doug Pederson be the first coach fired? Time will tell, but they are bad.
