How young people and social media could influence the 2024 election

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina — As Election Day approaches, young people could play a key role in the presidential race.

“So if we all decide to vote together, we can change this election and steer it in our favor,” said Tejah Travis, a student at Johnson C. Smith University.

Research shows that 41 million Generation Z members have the right to vote.

Some of them are voting for the first time.

“I just turned 18 and I’m really excited to be able to use my democratic abilities and also be a part of, you know, the democratic process in this country,” said Joanna Gilbert, a UNC Charlotte student.

Social media shapes many of their views, with many saying they consume news and follow politics on platforms like TikTok.

“We’re on our phones. That’s where we see everything. That’s where we’re going to get our news,” said Jermaine Jean, a student at Johnson C. Smith University.

TikTok is so popular among young voters that Donald Trump and Kamala Harris use it, with their videos racking up millions of views.

“It’s fun, but also, you know, it gives you the knowledge you need to make sure people understand what’s on the ballot in this election,” Travis said.

Many students agree that fact-checking is important to combat misinformation about the election that may circulate on social media.

“I think it’s a good way to start a conversation, but I feel like you can’t really get facts from a social media account,” said Miranda Lawson, a UNC Charlotte student.
