Washington tourist missing for a month found ‘alive and well’

Robert Schock went missing after last being seen hiking in North Cascades National Park. Park rangers found him Aug. 30 in the Chilliwack Basin.

Park rangers have found a missing hiker in Washington state’s North Cascades National Park a month after he went missing, police said Thursday.

According to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office, officials reported Robert Schock missing several days after he was last seen in the park on July 31. Witnesses saw the hiker near the Chilliwack River without any supplies for the night.

National Park Service rangers found Schock “alive and well” in the park’s Chilliwack Basin on Aug. 30, the sheriff’s office said in a statement Thursday.

USA TODAY reached out to the National Parks Service for more information about Schock’s disappearance, how he survived a month in the wild mountains and how he was found.

Schock’s dog found when he went missing

Concerns about Schock’s disappearance began Aug. 3 when his vehicle and dog were found abandoned eight miles from a hiking trail, the sheriff’s office said.

Officers found the vehicle with the windows rolled down and Schock’s wallet on the dashboard.

A series of ground and air searches were conducted in the remote area until August 16, but no traces of the missing man were found until he was discovered last week.
