Tigers Talk: Sutton Smith and what’s driving Memphis football – Memphis Local, Sports, Business and Food News

Welcome to this edition of Tigers Talk with Frank Bonner, Tigers football writer for The Daily Memphian, and John Martin, college sports columnist. Bonner and Martin will address some of the most pressing topics and storylines of the entire season.

If Sutton Smith can’t return, how concerned are you about Memphis’ offense?

Frank Bonner II: I won’t lie, losing Sutton Smith is a huge blow. I wouldn’t hold my breath for him to come back either. To put it in perspective, the Tigers acquired South Carolina’s best running back through the transfer portal this offseason, and Smith still earned a Week 1 spot over Mario Anderson. He’s that good.

Memphis didn’t just lose a ball carrier when he went down. They lost a quarterback who was expected to play a significant role as a pass catcher. It doesn’t help that Memphis ran for just 64 yards and averaged 2.5 yards per carry against North Alabama. I still think the offense will be explosive. Seth Henigan is the best quarterback in the conference, and Roc Taylor leads an experienced group of receivers.
