Seattle Mariners reportedly making big decision about their future

The Seattle Mariners have reportedly made the decision to re-hire president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto in 2025 and possibly beyond.

The Seattle Times reported the news Thursday after the Mariners beat the A’s 6-4. Seattle is now 71-70 and 4.5 points behind the Houston Astros in the American League West.

According to Ryan Divish and Adam Jude:

Multiple sources with direct knowledge of the decision-making process told The Times that the owners have decided to name Dipoto the team’s president of baseball operations through the 2025 season and possibly beyond.

It is not believed that Dipoto’s return will be contingent on the Mariners reaching the postseason, as that is unlikely.

General manager Justin Hollander, who signed a multi-year contract extension to his current role on Oct. 2 of last year, will also return, along with most of the key members of the baseball operations staff.

Dipoto has been with the Mariners since 2015 and has one playoff berth under his belt. While he is creative in how he builds his lineup, he has been criticized for the team’s strikeout woes and poor ability to develop hits and misses in free agency and trades.

The team had already fired manager Scott Servais earlier this summer, but is now poised to hire Dipoto and new manager Dan Wilson.

The Mariners will begin a new series on Friday night when they travel to St. Louis to face the Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

The Astros will play the Diamondbacks.
