Russell Wilson is battling an injury, which could be a concern for Steelers ahead of Week 1

With just days left before the season opener, Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson was dealing with calf tightness that limited his ability to participate in Thursday’s practice.

According to ESPN, Wilson previously addressed the issue during training camp, with the Steelers stating they “wanted to take some precautions.”

Mike Tomlin told reporters on Thursday that Wilson’s condition would be further evaluated.

“We’ll see what it looks like tomorrow and then we’ll make our next steps,” Tomlin said.

Questions about his health mean Justin Fields could be ready for the season opener against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday afternoon.

The Bears’ first-round pick in the 2021 draft was acquired by the Steelers in a trade in March after three tumultuous seasons in Chicago during which he failed to live up to expectations in the Windy City.

Despite potential questions, Tomlin expressed confidence in Fields.

“If that happens, I’d be very happy,” Tomlin said when asked about the possibility of Fields starting.

Fields also has the confidence of Pittsburgh’s defense.

“I don’t know the details or what’s going on, but obviously Russ is a great competitor,” Van Jefferson told reporters. “He wants to be there. If Justin has to go out there, he’s more than prepared to do it.

“But at the end of the day, we just go out and play. Whoever comes out, the job has to get done. So both quarterbacks are capable of doing that on Sunday and we’re just going to roll with whoever’s there.”

The Steelers are coming off a season in which they reached the postseason but were eliminated in the Wild Card round after losing to the Bills.

Wilson was named the Steelers’ starter in August before the start of the regular season.
