Officials investigate large house fire in Washtenaw County

A large fire and multiple explosions on Wednesday drew 11 fire departments to a Washtenaw County home, authorities said.

Superior Township Fire Chief Victor Chevrette said the 79-year-old man who owned the home on the 3800 block of Frains Lake Road called 911 about the fire at 12:44 pm

Emergency responders from 11 fire departments arrived to find the two-story, 5,000-square-foot home ablaze, Chevrette said. The large fire called for the unusual amount of crews and a tanker shuttle since there were no nearby hydrants in the rural area, he added.

“It was such a large home,” the fire chief said. “When we arrived, we had fire coming out all of the windows.”

A Huron Valley Ambulance transported the homeowner to a hospital emergency room in stable condition, HVA representative Marc Breckenridge told The Detroit News.

No other people were injured at the scene. With no nearby properties, the fire did not damage anything besides the home, he said.

Investigators have not determined what caused the fire yet, but officials know it started in the home’s basement, Chevrette said. Propane and aerosol cans in the home were what triggered the explosions, he said.
