As social media moves from the Parthenon to pumpkin patches, airlines are busily preparing for the 2025 European travel season. It is likely that strong demand for international travel will continue into next summer.

American Airlines on Thursday revealed new routes to Europe for next spring and summer. The carrier is launching nonstop service from Chicago to Madrid starting March 30; from Philadelphia to Milan starting May 23; from Philadelphia to Edinburgh, Scotland, starting May 23, for the first time since 2019; from Charlotte, North Carolina, to Athens, Greece, starting June 5; and from Miami to Rome starting July 5.

Competitors United Airlines and Delta Air Lines are expected to release their 2025 travel plans in the coming weeks.

American Airlines said capacity on its transatlantic routes next summer will increase by low- to mid-single-digits compared with this year, with executives confident consumers will continue to prioritize travel.

“In ’23, when people saw the demand for Italy and Greece, some people speculated that it would be a one-year thing. But this year, it’s just continued to grow, and our flights are full and our profitability is strong,” said Brian Znotins, senior vice president of network planning at American. “More capacity is justified to meet the demand.”

American’s data shows that travelers, including those on other airlines, often connect in Europe to get to Athens in particular, Znotins said. Next year, American said it will have four daily nonstop flights from the U.S. to Athens from “more U.S. airports than any other” and that more travelers will be able to connect through American’s hubs, such as Charlotte.

The carrier is also restoring other European flights from its Philadelphia hub to Naples, Italy, Nice, France and Copenhagen, Denmark, and is extending seasonal winter flights between Miami and Paris into the summer season.

Delays in Boeing’s deliveries of its 787 Dreamliners over the past few years have prompted American and other carriers to rethink some flights and reduce some international flights operated by the long-haul planes. American is also in the process of rebuilding some of its older 777s to build a larger business-class cabin.

Znotins said he and his team took both of those things into account when developing next year’s map.

More on CNBC:

“Of course, there is a level of uncertainty in the world of aircraft deliveries and there is a level of uncertainty with our reconfigurations,” Znotins said. “We are confident that we will be able to fly these routes as we have published them, but in an uncertain world, it is always nice to have a backup,” such as other hub cities serving Athens, for example, in case a passenger needs to be rerouted.
