DHL Shipping to close Raleigh headquarters, move distribution center to Concord with 150 jobs

DHL eCommerce, a division of one of the world’s largest freight forwarding companies, has opened a branch in Concord and hired 150 people.

DHL moved from its Raleigh distribution center last month to a 162,836-square-foot facility at 8475 Automation Drive in Cabarrus County, the company said in a news release Thursday. Operations began Aug. 18.

The facility, located 30 minutes from Charlotte Douglas International Airport, will process inbound and outbound domestic e-commerce shipments for online sellers across the United States, DHL said.

DHL said the single-level loop sorter at the distribution center is equipped with scanners and cameras that can process 24,000 packages per hour, or 30% more than the Raleigh facility could process.

The new Concord facility is able to handle increased volume during the holiday shipping season, DHL eCommerce Americas CEO Lee Spratt said in a statement. The Concord facility served as an annex to DHL’s Atlanta distribution center last year during the holiday season, the company said.

DHL did not immediately respond to requests for comment, including how much the company plans to invest in the Concord facility.
