Tigers lineup for Game 2 in San Diego against Yu Darvish

Tigers lineup for Game 2 in San Diego against Yu Darvish

The Detroit Tigers will try to piece together their offense Wednesday night, two days after failing to win their series opener in San Diego.

The Tigers (70-69) and Padres (79-61) will play the second of a three-game series at 9:40 p.m. ET at Petco Park.

The Tigers lost 3-0 on Monday.

Catcher Jake Rogers; infielders Andy Ibanez and Ryan Kreidler; infielder/outfielder Zach McKinstry; and outfielder Justyn-Henry Malloy will be available off the bench.

On the mound, Tigers rookie right-hander Keider Montero (4-6, ERA 5.17) will face off against Padres veteran right-hander Yu Darvish (4-3, ERA 3.20), who was activated from the injured list prior to the game.

Montero allowed three runs in five innings in his last appearance on August 29 against the Los Angeles Angels.

Darvish, 38, made his U.S. debut in 2012 with the Texas Rangers after a dominant run in Japanese baseball. He earned five All-Star nods and passed Hideo Nomo as the MLB strikeout leader among Japanese-born players in 2023.

Darvish has not played since May 29. He initially went on the injured list with a groin strain and was later moved to the prohibited list for personal reasons.

Darvish has never lost against the Tigers: he is 7-0 in eight starts since 2012.
