This fall, 9 paid interns will support KUT News, Texas Standard and KUTX music

Who has two differently shaped thumbs and is excited to gain more experience in audio journalism? This will be the new intern of the Texas Standard Elijah Carll.

Carll is one of nine paid interns joining the KUT and KUTX teams this fall. The group was selected from a pool of more than 80 applicants. KUT and KUTX interns work with award-winning professionals in five different teams at both stations, from news production to audio engineering.

The internships are designed to provide interns with real-world experience and work samples. The KUT and KUTX internship program also supports interns with additional programs on topics such as workplace confidence and navigating job applications.

Charles and Yoali Rodriguez will help tell the state’s story this semester through the Texas Standard.

Carll is a third-year journalism student at the University of Texas at Austin. He has held several positions at The Daily Texan, where he currently directs the development of a long-form investigative podcast. His journalism interests are diverse, including once directing a documentary about baby possums.

Rodríguez is a senior studying multimedia journalism at the University of Texas at El Paso. She previously interned at El Paso Inc. and has also written for The City Magazine and Borderzine. At UTEP, she was editor-in-chief of Minero Magazine. Her long-term goal is to work for a fashion magazine.

Drank Saravia AND Mason Rouser will be working with the KUT News team this fall.

Saravia is a third-year journalism and radio-television-film major at the University of Texas at Austin. She is a news editor at The Daily Texan and previously interned at Houston Public Media. Raised in Durango, Mexico, Saravia dreams of traveling the world and loves cooking in the kitchen.

Rouser is a recent graduate of the University of Texas with a bachelor’s degree in public affairs. He covered city events for The Daily Texan’s politics section before becoming news editor. Rouser is looking forward to expanding his reporting beyond the UT community with the internship.

Charlotte Keene AND Livia Blackburn They complete internships in the KUT and KUTX multimedia team, which collaborates with news and music teams on photography and videography projects.

Keene is a third-year journalism student at the University of Texas at Austin. She is a staff photographer for The Daily Texan and a former editor. She has also written for UT’s music publication Afterglow and hosted shows for the student-run music station KVRX. Keene says she has a passion for documenting the community and enjoys going to concerts and walking through albums.

Blackburn is a senior in radio-television-film at the University of Texas at Austin. She previously interned at Go-Valley and is an executive producer for the live television show and digital channel Austin Underground. Blackburn is interested in documenting and exploring digital culture and local community through visual and written media.

Nadia Petru AND Daschel Maroney join the KUT and KUTX audio production team. They will work with engineers to record audio both in the studio and at remote events.

Petru is a sophomore studying Radio-Television-Film at the University of Texas at Austin. She is part of the student radio station KVRX, as well as the University Fashion Group. In her free time, Petru enjoys spending time with her family or hanging out with friends at Zilker Park.

Maroney is in his second year of studying audio production at Austin Community College. He plans to transfer to Texas State University next year to complete his bachelor’s degree. He loves playing drums in local bands and baking.

Mary Dougherty In the fall he will join the KUTX music group.

Dougherty is a senior studying radio-television-film at the University of Texas at Austin. She is the station manager across the bridge at the campus’ sister station, KVRX. She is incredibly passionate about creating content that supports independent musicians. In her free time, Dougherty enjoys reading and playing any of the New York Times games.
