SPORTS BRIEF: MCC Men’s Soccer Team Secures Second Win in a Row | News, Sports, Jobs


The Marshalltown Community College men’s soccer team was shorthanded for the final 30 minutes but still beat the Hawkeyes 2-0 on Wednesday.

It is the second straight victory for the Tigers (2-1-1), who resume play Saturday against Dakota County Technical College in Rosemount, Minn.

Wednesday’s match ended goalless, with Alejandro Vientimilla breaking the deadlock in the 46th minute after an assist from David Ospina. The Tigers scored again to make it 2-0 just five minutes later through Pedro Costa.

Matheus de Silva was sent off with a red card 30 minutes remaining but MCC survived the defeat, with Joao Augusto saving six shots to secure a clean sheet.

Bobcat volleyball players claim dominant victory over Hoover

DES MOINES — The Marshalltown volleyball team improved to 2-0 after a 3-0 victory over host Des Moines Hoover on Tuesday, defeating the Huskies 25-6, 25-6, 25-8.

The Bobcats had a balanced offensive attack, led by seniors Kennedy Feldman, Madison Rogers, Olivia Holmgren, Ellie Hughes and Sydney Kapayou with three kills each. Hughes led the Setters with eight assists, while Gaby Estabrook had five and Lauren O’Neal had two. The Bobcats combined for 20 kills and finished with a .469 hitting efficiency in the dominant victory.

Rogers and Holmgren had solo blocks for the Bobcat defense, while Gianna Baune’s two-pointer was the best against Hoover’s limited attack. Marshalltown had 23 service aces, serving 60-for-70 on the night. Estabrook was 14-for-14 with eight aces, while Bella Avise was 9-for-9 with four aces.

The Bobcats return to action in the Apgar Invite on Thursday, hosting Solon, Waterloo Columbus and Waverly-Shell Rock in a round robin that begins at 5 p.m. at the Roundhouse.

GMG volleyball players crush Clarksville in three-set match

CLARKSVILLE — The GMG volleyball team improved to 6-1 with a three-set victory over Clarksville in the Iowa Star Conference on Tuesday.

The Wolverines won the interdivisional competition 25-10, 25-9, 25-16.

GMG’s attack was led by Makayla Pendleton with nine kills and Olivia Maddux with six. Setter Hadlee Hempy had 15 assists in the match.

Landry August led the Wolverine defense with seven saves, while Pendleton had two of the team’s four blocks at the net.

August also served 24-of-25 with a team-leading five aces. Hempy was 17-of-17 with three aces, and Ava Maddux was 9-of-9 with three aces. Aubree Runner also had a perfect 16-of-16.

Spartans fall to Tigers in early conference clash

ELDORA — Class 2A No. 5 South Hardin defeated No. 14 Grundy Center in three sets in NICL West Division volleyball play Tuesday.

The host Tigers won for the third time in their last five meetings at Grundy Center, securing a 25-14, 25-19, 25-20 triumph.

Ryanne Brubaker led the Spartans (3-1, 0-1) with nine kills and one of five blocks. Kayden Muller added six kills, a team-high 10 digs and a block, and Raelyn Steinmeyer added three kills and eight digs. Lauren Zajac totaled 12 assists and Caturella Brown added six more.

Jordann Van Wechel had 12 of 12 serves for Grundy Center, while Muller was 11 of 12, scoring three of the team’s seven aces.

Ava Salvo led South Hardin (6-2, 1-0) with 17 points.

UNI’s Anderson honored by Missouri Valley

CEDAR FALLS — Northern Iowa left guard Blake Anderson was named the Missouri Valley Football Conference Offensive Lineman of the Week.

Anderson’s first career weekly blocking honor helped the Panthers’ running game post the fourth-most rushing yards in the last 15 seasons and its first game since 2016 with more than 300 yards.

Anderson’s blocking paved the way for quarterback Tye Edwards to score the first multi-touchdown game of his career, including a 54-yard touchdown run.
