Seattle Mariners score season-high in runs against Oakland Athletics

Seattle Mariners score season-high in runs against Oakland Athletics

The Seattle Mariners entered Wednesday’s matchup with the Oakland Athletics on a four-game losing streak. All three of those games ended in one-point losses and three in walk-offs. Whether it was frustration with how the last four days had gone or simply motivation to get things right, Seattle didn’t give Oakland a chance to do the same thing three times.

The Mariners set a season-high in points scored and snapped a four-game losing streak with a 16-3 victory over the Athletics on Wednesday. It was the most points scored by Seattle in a single game since a comeback win over the San Diego Padres on June 6, 2016.

The Mariners gained one game over the Astros and moved to 5.5 games behind them in the American League West. They remain 5.5 games out of the third AL Wild Card with the win. Seattle improved to 70-70 on the year.

“A lot of positives today. Up and down the lineup,” Mariners manager Dan Wilson said in a postgame interview Wednesday. “… Offensively, we did a lot of great things up and down the lineup. Huge game for (Mitch Garver) — (Luis Urias) as well. Just some great at-bats all around. Using the second field, some great at-bats with two strikeouts. We talked a lot about the effort that was there all week. Those guys kept fighting and today was a great way for them to get their act together. A lot of positives all around.”

The Athletics took the lead first when Brent Rooker hit an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning.

It was one of two blemishes for Seattle starting pitcher George Kirby. He had his first good start since Aug. 18 after pitching six innings and allowing six hits and two earned runs. He struck out nine batters and didn’t give up a free base.

Garver restored the Mariners’ lead with a double in the top of the second inning and had an RBI single one inning later to give Seattle a 3-1 lead. Garver’s single started one of several multi-score innings for the Mariners. Urias had an RBI double and Dylan Moore had an RBI single to increase Seattle’s lead to 5-1.

JJ Bleday gave Oakland its second run with an RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The Mariners’ second multi-run inning came in the top of the seventh. Urias had a solo home run, Julio Rodriguez had an RBI single, Randy Arozarena had a two-run double, Victor Robles scored on a single, Urias was passed with the bases loaded, and Moore scored on a sacrifice fly. Seattle had a 12-2 lead at the end of the inning.

Zack Gelof scored the third and final point for the Athletics in the bottom of the seventh inning on a groundout by Max Schuemann.

Seattle then put the icing on the cake of its best offensive display of the season by scoring four consecutive points in the top of the eighth inning.

Robles had an RBI double, Garver drove in Justin Turner and Urias had an RBI double to make it 16-3.

The Mariners’ bottom four batters (Robles, Garver, Urias, Moore) combined for 13 RBIs on 10 hits. Urias and Robles both went 3-for-4, and every batter in the Seattle lineup recorded a base hit.

As good as Wednesday was for Seattle, it doesn’t erase the previous four games on the road. Four losses by one point sting, especially this late in the season.

But with 22 games remaining, Wednesday could prove to be something of a blueprint for the Mariners, allowing them to avoid close games in the future and take advantage of a weak schedule.

Seattle will be hoping to come out of the final series at the Oakland Coliseum with a tie. The Mariners will play the Athletics in the series finale at 12:37 p.m. PT on Thursday.

Bryan Woo will be in the starting lineup for the series finale.
