The bicycle and sign display can be found at the intersection of Marketplace and Cochran Boulevard in Port Charlotte. It aims to send a message to the community after a girl was hit by a car.

“She has a broken pelvis and a broken wrist,” said Angellique’s aunt, Penny Nichols.

Angellique’s uncle, Joshua Schmidt, told FOX 4’s Victoria Scott that she was riding her bike to school without a helmet when she was hit by a car.

“We were woken up by police officers at the door, telling us she was going to be airlifted to the hospital,” Schmidt said.

He told Scott he was in a complete panic.

“‘Oh my God, is she gone? Will she be with us? Will she be OK?’

However, Penny said her niece is already making progress on the road to recovery.

“When we left the hospital, she was able to stand up and walk with the help of a walker,” Penny told Scott.

She also added that Angellique’s accident taught her something.

“That near-death experience really opened (Angellique’s) eyes to how amazing life is,” Penny said. “Teenagers think they’re too cool. We really need to get the message out to the community that it doesn’t matter how old you are; you need a helmet.”

Helmets can save lives.

Some members of Angelique’s family also shared some advice with the public.

“We’re looking both ways,” Evelynn Nichols said. “I’m really mad that a car hit my older sister.”

“Cars should look both ways so they don’t hit other people,” said Melody Schmidt. “I wear a helmet every day when I ride my bike so I’m safe and don’t hit other people.”

Scott asked officials with the Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office if they would take any other action following Angellique’s accident.

Still waiting for a response from them.
