Michigan Fall Foliage Map: When Colors Start Changing

Michigan Fall Foliage Map: When Colors Start Changing

Vegetation map from Smokymountains.com.

Fall colors are starting to appear in Michigan as the beginning of fall draws closer, and trees across the state are once again turning vibrant shades of red, yellow, and orange.

With the transition, the 2024 fall foliage forecast map is now available. And according to Smokymountains.com, the northernmost corners of the Upper Peninsula are already seeing some changes.

The changes are minor for now, but by mid-September the entire state will be awash with color, with the biggest changes expected in Baraga and Marquette counties.

According to an interactive map, foliage will reach peak growth across much of the state in early October.

According to a local arborist who told FOX 2, this year’s colors could be even more beautiful as heat and drought stress could cause an early fall.

“The plants are tired,” Josh Leo said. “We’re starting to get to the end of the season, we’ve had some hot days, but we’ve also had a lot of moisture.”

He predicted that the peak of color in the Detroit metropolitan area would occur around the third or fourth week.
