Maddow Blog | Trump rushes after top volunteer says New Hampshire is out of the game

In mid-July, The Wall Street Journal highlighted a polling report from Blue Rose Research, a Democratic pollster, that showed President Joe Biden not only losing every battleground state but also struggling in states he won with relative ease four years ago. That included New Hampshire, which the Democrat won by more than seven percentage points in 2020.

Much has changed since mid-July. The Boston Globe reported over the holiday weekend:

Tom Mountain, who served as one of several vice-chairs of the former president’s Massachusetts campaign, wrote in an email to Trump volunteers in the state that “the campaign has determined that New Hampshire is no longer a battleground state” and advised supporters to instead turn their attention to Pennsylvania. … In the email, Mountain, a former Massachusetts GOP official, said Trump “will certainly lose by an even larger margin” in New Hampshire than he did in 2016 and 2020, citing “campaign data/research.”

The same message added that Mountain said resources would be redirected away from the Granite State and the Republican campaign would not send the candidate or his top surrogates to the state.

This information is based on an email obtained by the Globe but has not been independently verified by MNSBC or NBC News.

Nevertheless, the report did not go unnoticed. In fact, the Trump campaign and its allies downplayed Mountain’s role and said he “will not be involved in any way going forward.” Brian Hughes, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign, added that the Republican operation still believes New Hampshire is “in play.”

The former president, for his part, posted on his social media account claiming that Vice President Kamala Harris is having “problems” in New Hampshire, a claim he apparently made up to respond to the Globe’s reporting.

Trump continued in his letter by arguing that Harris “never showed up” in the New Hampshire presidential primary, which was odd considering that (a) Harris was not running for president at the time of the primary and (b) there were no competitive primaries held in the state.

Regardless, recent polls have seemed favorable for the Democratic candidate in the state, and neither campaign has devoted significant resources to New Hampshire in recent weeks. Watch this space.
