The Phoenix Suns will add a fifth preseason game this year when they play the Detroit Pistons in a preseason game Oct. 8 at Michigan State’s Breslin Center. Suns owner Mat Ishbia was a reserve on the Spartans’ 2000 national championship team under Tom Izzo.

“From being a player on a Michigan State national championship team to having the opportunity to play with the Phoenix Suns at the Breslin Center, this is a full-circle moment and an incredibly special experience,” Ishbia said in a Suns press release.

“MSU and Coach Izzo have had an immeasurable impact on my life and career, and I wouldn’t be where I am today, including as owner of the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury, without Coach Izzo’s mentorship. I can’t wait to bring the Spartan and Phoenix Suns communities together.”

Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gores is also a Michigan State graduate.

“Michigan State University is a special place and I am excited to bring our team and the excitement of NBA basketball to sports fans in East Lansing,” Gores said in a press release. “The Lansing area and MSU community have always supported Pistons Basketball, and we are excited to give fans an early look at our efforts to improve the team and build the foundation for delivering competitive basketball.”

The Pistons will host a preseason game, returning to East Lansing for the first time since 2018. Tickets start at $15 and go on sale Tuesday at 7 a.m. Phoenix time at www.msuspartans.com.

It’s also a chance for Suns All-Star Devin Booker to play in front of family and friends. He was born and raised in Grand Rapids, which is less than 90 minutes from East Lansing.

“We are thrilled to welcome the Pistons and Suns to the Breslin Center — two teams that we are fortunate to have great relationships with and close ties to our school and team,” Izzo said in a press release.

“Having an NBA game on campus with two Spartan alumni as owners shows the strength of Michigan State and the talent and quality of people that come from our great university,” he added. “It’s an honor to call Tom Gores a friend, and everyone knows the special bond I have with Mat, having coached him as a former player in our program. I’m excited for the game and the opportunity to showcase NBA basketball to our MSU basketball fans and everyone here in the East Lansing community.”

That gives Phoenix five preseason games, two of which are against Detroit. The Pistons and Suns will meet again on Oct. 11 at Footprint Center.

The Suns will play four preseason games in eight days, three of which will be away.

They will begin their pre-season preparations on October 6 against the Los Angeles Lakers in Palm Springs, face the Pistons twice, and then host the Denver Nuggets at Ball Arena on October 13.

Phoenix concludes preseason play Oct. 17 at home against the Lakers. The Suns open the regular season Oct. 23 at the Los Angeles Clippers.
