‘Get ready.’ Palo Alto man charged with shooting threats at elected officials’ offices

PALO ALTO – Authorities arrested a 22-year-old Palo Alto man Wednesday on charges of threatening to shoot up the offices of a U.S. congresswoman and a Florida state representative.

On February 15, Aaditya Chand sent direct messages to the congresswoman via Instagram, allegedly saying, “I’m shooting your office down tomorrow, you Palestinian scum” and “Get ready,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a press release.

The messages were received by the congresswoman’s staff in Washington.

The representative also received a message from Chand that allegedly stated, “Tomorrow I will bring a gun to your office and shoot you and your staff,” authorities said. Federal agents allegedly read the message during an interview with Chand.

The indictment unsealed Wednesday charges Chand with transmitting communications in interstate or foreign commerce containing a threat to cause injury to a person.

If convicted, Chand faces up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.
