Colossus was supposed to train LLM and Grok xAI using Nvidia H200 chips

(Web Desk) – Multi-billion dollar founder Elon Musk has unveiled “Colossus,” a new supercomputer developed by his artificial intelligence startup xAI.

“The world’s most powerful AI training system,” according to Elon Musk, which will compete with OpenAI’s GPT-4.

Colossus was supposed to train xAI’s large language model (LLM), Grok, and that supercomputer is located in Memphis. Musk’s third-generation AI model Grok-3 will be trained by Colossus.

The world’s most powerful AI, Colossus, is expected to be released in December.

The project is developing rapidly amid intense competition from tech rivals Microsoft, Google and Amazon, all looking to leverage artificial intelligence by acquiring AI chips.

Elon Musk also revealed plans to purchase 50,000 of Nvidia’s advanced H200 chips, which are expected to outperform the current H100 models.

An early beta version of Grok-2, trained on 15,000 Nvidia H100 processors, was recently released and is already considered one of the most performing AI models.

Musk has pledged to spend $3-4 billion on Nvidia hardware this year for both xAI and Tesla.

The project has also drawn interest in Memphis because the Colossus requires as much as 1 million gallons of water per day for cooling and could use as much as 150 megawatts of energy, straining the city’s resources.
