The Royal Family

Find out where Princess Diana was buried and which members of the royal family attended her grave and which did not.

Princess Diana died in a car accident more than 25 years ago. At the time of her death, her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, were just 15 and 12 years old. As a result, their wives and children never met her.

Over the years, the princes have spoken of keeping their mother’s memory alive, and this is especially true for their children. William said it was “important for them to know who she was and that she existed.”

So while Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis know all about their “Grandma Diana,” many wonder if William and Kate ever took them to Diana’s grave. Here’s the answer to that question, plus which other family members were there and which weren’t.

Where is Princess Diana buried?

Princess Diana was buried at Althorp Estate in Northamptonshire, the family home of Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer. He inherited the estate when their father, John Spencer, died in 1992. Princess Diana’s grave is located on an island next to an ornamental lake (known as The Oval) in Althorp Park’s Pleasure Garden. The path to the lake is lined with 36 oak trees, each representing a year in Diana’s life. The burial site is accessible only by boat. It is closed to the public but open to members of the royal family who wish to stop and pay their respects.

In 2001, Diana’s brother criticized then-Prince Charles for never visiting his ex-wife’s grave. He told the Daily Mail that Charles had always had an open invitation to visit, but “has yet to take up that invitation.” A Palace spokesman would not confirm or deny whether the prince had visited the grave since then, saying only in a statement that “The question of whether Charles visited (Princess Diana’s) grave is a personal and private matter for him.”

Prince William and Prince Harry have visited their mother’s grave several times. In his diary, where he tells everything, ReserveThe Duke of Sussex revealed he took Meghan there for the first time in 2022.

And William brought Kate there for the first time in 2011, shortly before their wedding. But have the prince and princess’ three children ever been there?

Have George, Charlotte and Louis visited their grandmother’s grave?

Royal author Phil Dampier told Fabulous magazine that not only does William keep his mother’s memory alive by talking about her with his children, but the young royals also visit their grandmother’s grave.

“William and Kate took the children to visit Diana’s grave at Althorp,” he said, before opining: “It must be very emotional when they do that.”

Dampier added: “Kate always makes sure her children know all about Diana, especially on anniversaries such as her birthday or death. Her mum, Carole, is very close to George, Charlotte and Louis, and is of course the grandmother they grew up with, although unfortunately they never met Diana. Kate didn’t either, and on the day of her engagement to William she said she would have loved to.”

“They keep her memory alive in many ways. I’m sure (the children) will feel her influence as they grow up.”
