Columbus Mayor Keith Gaskin gives update on his health

COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Columbus Mayor Keith Gaskin said his health is good and improving every day.

At the request of his family and doctors, the mayor took a two-week leave from work.

Gaskin said that at this point his cholesterol levels were indeed high and needed to be treated.

He also suffered from sleep deprivation caused by stress.

At a press conference this morning, Gaskin admitted that now is not the best time to travel during the budget process.

He thanked city employees for the work they did during his absence.

Gaskin said he would reveal more details about his health in his free time.

“I don’t have to talk about it. I wouldn’t have to say a word about it under the law if it’s not required. But as a public official and someone who runs the city, I felt it was very important. I also wanted to make these statements because maybe it will help someone not make the same mistakes that I did. So I will do that and I will do that in the near future; but until then, I will not be answering any more questions about it. You can ask them, but the answer is I intend to talk about it in the near future,” Gaskin said.

Gaskin also encouraged all citizens to come to him and ask about his health. He was happy to discuss the situation with them.
