Broncos’ Patrick Surtain II gets new million-a-year contract

ENGLEWOOD | Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain II signed a four-year contract extension Wednesday worth $96 million, with $77.5 million guaranteed.

“Signed, sealed, delivered,” Surtain said with a smile after signing a contract with an average annual salary of $24 million, allowing him to pass Buccaneers defensive end Antoine Winfield Jr. ($21.025 million) and Packers cornerback Jaire Alexander ($21 million) to become the highest-paid defensive back in the NFL.

Earlier this year, the Broncos exercised Surtain’s five-year contract option, guaranteeing him $19.802 million in 2025. He is scheduled to receive about $3.5 million this season.

The new contract takes effect in 2026 and means Surtain will remain in Denver through the 2029 season.
Surtain was voted captain by his teammates this week, along with wide receiver Courtland Sutton, cornerback Quinn Meinerz, quarterback Bo Nix, middle linebacker Alex Singleton and kicker Wil Lutz.

Nix is the first Broncos rookie to be named captain before the season opener since Hall of Fame quarterback Floyd Little in 1967.
