INDIANAPOLIS — A local organization is hoping to make a difference and take practical steps to combat gun violence in Indianapolis.

Next week the Indy Center for Conflict Resolution is hosting a training for community mediators.

The organization works as a solution for those who struggle with conflict issues in their lives and need mutual help from third parties or a safe space and time to discuss issues and forget about heightened emotions, the organization’s representatives say.

During the mediator training, participants will gain valuable skills in negotiation, communication, active listening and conflict resolution.

Officials say community mediation resolves 86% of cases within an average day, preventing potential escalations before they begin.

“It’s a really easy way to intervene before something happens,” said Cortnee Yarbrough, director of strategic prevention at the Indy Center for Conflict Resolutions. “We’ll teach you listening skills, de-escalation skills, conversational skills that are really important to get beyond the problem.”

Conflict Resolution Training will be held at 958 E. Washington St. on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, September 10 from 9:00 to 16:00
  • Wednesday, September 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • Thursday, September 12th from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
