US diplomat in Taiwan: Maintaining strategic balance is key to regional stability

Raymond Greene, Washington’s top diplomat in Taipei, insisted Wednesday that Taiwan is not China’s only target in seeking to change the regional status quo.

In a conversation with journalists, Greene, the newly appointed director of the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) and de facto US ambassador, stressed that maintaining a “strategic balance” in the region would help strengthen relations between the two countries.

Despite the lack of formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, the United States remains the island’s most important international sponsor and arms supplier.
