Read Charlotte’s full proposal to raise Mecklenburg’s sales tax on transportation

The Charlotte City Council voted 10-1 Tuesday to support a bill that would put on the Mecklenburg County ballot the issue of raising the sales tax to fund transportation.

Matthews leaders previously voted against the plan, while Cornelius voted to support it. Mecklenburg County and other cities in the county will vote on the bill in the next two weeks. It is up to the state Legislature to decide whether to pass the bill.

The bill provides:

  • Referendum text on raising Mecklenburg County’s sales tax by 1 cent to cover transportation needs and how the new revenue would be divided between rail, bus and road projects

  • The Future of the Red Line Commuter Rail Project

  • A new public transit authority will manage the Charlotte area’s public transit system.
