Is Greg Dulcich ready to become a threat?

Is Greg Dulcich ready to become a threat?

Welcome to Broncos Buzz, where each week The Post sports staff will gather to cover the stories they’re most interested in. It could be a juicy game (hello, Russell Wilson and Pittsburgh in Week 2) or a hidden trend. Each week, it’ll be our first thoughts on Sean Payton’s team, the Broncos’ opponent, or something specific that our reporters are thinking about for the week.

Week 1 is just around the corner, and Denver heads to Seattle for Sunday afternoon’s opener against the Seahawks. So Let’s Ride… wait. Let’s get started.

Parker Gabriel, Broncos reporter: For all the talk about Bo Nix and the Broncos’ quarterbacks this offseason, Vance Joseph’s defense has gotten a lot of attention. But make no mistake: This group needs to be off to a much better start than it was last fall. Despite a turnover-fueled renaissance in the middle of the 2023 season, the overall product Denver put out last year didn’t look good. The Broncos ranked 27th in scoring defense, 29th in yards allowed, 30th in rushing yards allowed and were near the bottom of ESPN’s win metrics in both the run game and quarterback offense. In 2024, Joseph is banking on a more aggressive style and a revamped defensive line to turn things around. If that happens, this team could surprise, and Joseph could get back on the interview circuit for a head coaching job. But if the Broncos stumble, the pressure and talk about Joseph’s job security will quickly mount.

Not only that, but Week 1 on the road against new NFL coordinator Ryan Grubb and a quarterback in Geno Smith who isn’t afraid to throw the ball downfield is a fascinating first test. All eyes will be on Nix, but the 2024 Broncos will go as their defense goes.

Troy Renck, columnist: Let’s not rush to judgment. The Broncos want us to believe they’re different, they’re better. All we know for sure is they’re younger. They’re bringing in rookie quarterback Bo Nix in a hostile environment. How will they improve? The Broncos need to run the ball well against a Seattle team that has been terrible in the ground game the past two seasons.

Javonte Williams, 10 pounds lighter, has re-energized himself in training camp, making Samaje Perine expendable. But can he improve around the goal line? He has seven rushing touchdowns, all in the red zone, in 37 games. Will the Broncos rely on a committee approach with Jaleel McLaughlin and Audric Estime? New Seahawks coach Mike Macdonald is known as a defensive genius, but Seattle’s running staff remains uncertain unless rookie Byron Murphy dominates from the start. The Broncos need to push for 125 rushing yards to win, which means Williams must prove he’s still a capable NFL starter.

Ryan McFadden, Broncos reporter: Outside of Courtland Sutton, who else could prove to be a legitimate weapon for Nix? Sutton proved to be the best offensive option on Denver’s roster last fall. But if Nix wants to have a successful rookie campaign, he’ll need more than Sutton to contribute to the passing game.
