Group warns of possible impact of school choice amendment

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Some public education advocates have expressed their displeasure with the Second Amendment to the Constitution, also known as the School Choice Amendment, set to be on the Kentucky ballot in November.

On Tuesday morning in Louisville, Teamsters 783 on Beulah Church Road hosted an event encouraging people to vote “no.”

A “yes” vote on Amendment 2 would allow the General Assembly to provide state funding to students outside of public schools. This could include private and charter schools, as well as homeschooling.

A “no” vote would mean maintaining state funding for public schools.

Event organizers say a “yes” vote would have a negative impact on communities across Kentucky.

“Instead of improving our public schools for all of our children, politicians in Frankfurt want to rob public schools and give select students vouchers to attend private schools,” said Felicia Nu’Man, director of the Center for Justice & Policy Initiatives. “Government shouldn’t be picking winners and losers. We should be helping all of our children get a head start.”

They argue that private schools are not accountable in the same way as public schools.

While this group opposes Amendment 2, many support it, arguing that it gives parents more control over their children’s education.
