Girls High School Tennis Review: Bishop Diego, Santa Barbara, San Marcos Win Big | Sports

The Bishop Diego girls tennis team opened its season with a dominant 16-2 victory over Fillmore on Tuesday at Santa Barbara Municipal Courts.

The Cardinals went 9-0 in singles and 7-2 in doubles, with their most victories coming in the top two pairs.

In singles, freshman Natalie Chan led the pack with three wins without dropping a single match. Junior Haley Hubbs also dominated, dropping just one match, and Rafaela Fay also had three wins.

“I was pleased with how Natalie and Haley stayed focused and took care of business,” Bishop Diego coach Peter Kirkwood said. “Rafaela battled the ebb and flow of each set. She established the mentality that she had a better tolerance for rallies than her opponents.”

The duos of Anja Fassbind/Victoria Heredia and Sophia Regan/Avery Carter won all three sets, losing only two games each.

“Anja and Victoria looked very comfortable today, serving and returning really well,” Kirkwood said. “Sophia and Avery played the same kind of complementary tennis, outpacing their opponents with their movement.”

Sonia Marquez-Miranda and Charlotte Ortman scored the final point for their team, winning 6-3.

“Charlotte was able to serve and Sonia was a great finisher. It was a very satisfying result for both Sonia and Charlotte,” Kirkwood said.

Bishop Diego (1-0) will host Hueneme on the road next Monday.
