Furious Seattle Mariners fans can’t have it all

Furious Seattle Mariners fans can’t have it all

Look, I’ve said many times that I generally like Jerry Dipoto and generally would like to see him back in 2025. I think he’s engaging, fairly transparent, and at least creative in how he builds his roster. I also don’t think anyone would come in and challenge John Stanton to build a bigger budget.

That said, I’m not going to exempt him from criticism for the mess that is the Seattle Mariners of the ’69-’69 season. A management that thinks Dom Canzone is better than Luke Raley in the first month of the season and that thinks Dylan Moore is the answer to all problems cannot be free from blame.

I don’t expect you to exonerate him or the office, but I ask you to at least be consistent.

Let’s take a look at a recent tweet from Monday from Dick Fain of 93.3 KJR:

I thought I’d check the results for fun…

Suarez 3/4 HR
Teoscar 5/5
France 4/4

That’s 12 out of 14 children.

I’m not saying that Dick Fain is guilty of what I’m about to say, but his message perfectly captures my problem: M. fans need to be consistent.

Everywhere on social media I see fans saying “Jerry picks all the wrong players!” Well, if you’re going to throw that in my face every time the old Mariner has a good game, then I’ll point out that can’t be true.

Honestly, if you think Jerry is picking bad players for this lineup, then you’re assuming Geno, Teo, and France are bad and that they basically got lucky with their next spots. If that’s the case, don’t play the “gotcha” game with me every time they play well.

If you think they are good but were bad on the Mariners team, then Jerry clearly picked good players and in that case the question is not about Jerry Dipoto but about why the stadium or coaching staffs limited their abilities.

And if you want to blame Jerry for choosing a coaching staff and sticking with it, that’s fine, but you can’t have everything. I don’t care if you criticize, just be consistent. Either Jerry picks bad players and they stink all the way through, or they’re good players who got stifled in Seattle.

And that’s not Jerry Dipoto’s problem.
