Doug Pederson offers cryptic answer on Jaguars play

Jacksonville Jaguars coach Doug Pederson is keeping the details to himself.

After months of answering questions about whether he or offensive coordinator Press Taylor would call the shots on offense in 2024, Pederson finally gave a clear answer Monday, just six days before the Jaguars open the season in Miami.

“I haven’t made up my mind yet,” Pederson said Monday when asked if he had made a decision on a full-time quarterback.

Will he reveal the answer later in the week, like Wednesday?

“Yeah, maybe. Maybe you’ll never know,” Pederson said with a smile.

“You can just stop asking that question. You’ll never know.”

Pederson responded with a smile and good humor, but there may be some truth to his words. After Pederson and Taylor split play-calling duties in 2022, would anyone really know the lineup in 2024 if Pederson didn’t make it known outright?

The question of who would call the plays for the Jaguars in 2024 came this offseason after the Jaguars offense regressed in 2023. 2023 was Taylor’s first year as a full-time play caller after Pederson and Taylor called the plays in 2022.

Jaguars owner Shad Khan spoke out about the quarterback over the summer and made his preference clear.

“Yeah, I have an opinion, okay. But these are things, it’s like the question about Trevor, I have an opinion and I think, but I don’t want to tell people, look, we have to do this. Because then things don’t work out, they look at me and say, we did this because you wanted us to,” Khan said in June. “Okay. So I think there’s been so much written about it. Hell, the New York Times had a piece about it and you remember the last line of that piece. Okay, the last line of that piece about it. So I think, but Doug, he has the power. I’ll let him decide.

“The final sentence was: Given everything Doug Pederson is doing this season, it’s smart to keep his hand on the wheel.”

Pederson first got a chance to change the quarterback position in February.

“I think those are things that I have to, you know, consider this offseason and this spring. You know, there were things outside of my control that I had to deal with more, you know, last year that take your mind off some of those things,” Pederson said at the NFL Scouting Combine earlier this year.

“And I won’t get into that, but, you know, so yeah, it’s something that I have to, as part of the evaluation process, I have to evaluate, you know, myself and Press as decision-makers and playmakers and see what’s best for our team.”
