Dak Prescott contract negotiations put on hold

Dak Prescott contract negotiations put on hold

Time is running out for Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys to reach an agreement on a new contract before the 2024 NFL season.

The two sides are in talks, sources say, but time is running out to get a deal done if Jerry Jones and company want the star quarterback to avoid becoming a free agent in 2025.

As negotiations continue, we learn what is causing delays in contract talks.

According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic about her Scoop City podcast, discussions have been put on hold due to the length of the potential deal.

“From what I understand, the delay at this point is about the number of years the Dallas Cowboys are willing to commit to,” she said during the discussion, which begins at the 8:07 mark.

Prescott wants a long-term commitment from the team, while Dallas is considering whether they want to keep him around “more than two, three, four years.”

She continued: “He’s looking for a long-term commitment from Dallas. So the obstacle here is really the belief of the Dallas Cowboys. He’s a guy who’s won a lot of games. But is that enough? Winning isn’t enough for Jerry Jones. We know that. They want to do more… they don’t want to be just a team that wins a lot of games. They want to be a team that can play in the Super Bowl.”

Prescott is betting on himself entering the 2024 NFL season in the final year of his contract.

He has a no-trade, no-tag clause, so if a deal doesn’t happen, he’ll become an unrestricted free agent. That spells trouble for the Cowboys, who would be in a bidding war if they wanted to bring Prescott back to the Big D.

If a deal doesn’t get done before the season, the price tag will only go up. And Prescott, who was the NFL MVP runner-up a year ago, knows he has all the assets.

Last season, Prescott had one of the best seasons of his career. He threw for 4,516 yards, an NFL-leading 36 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. That effort earned Prescott a second-team All-Pro selection and a nod to the third Pro Bowl of his career.

It’s only a matter of time before Prescott becomes the highest-paid player in the league. The question is whether it’ll be the Cowboys or another franchise.

Dallas will open its 2024 campaign on Sunday, September 8 on the road against the Cleveland Browns. Tom Brady will make his commentary debut on FOX.
