Chris Brooks Finds New Team; Former Dolphins Players Host Workouts

Running back Chris Brooks did not remain without a team for long.

A day after the Miami Dolphins released Brooks in a contract settlement that allowed him to sign with any team, he joined the Green Bay Packers’ practice squad.

Brooks’ quest to make the active roster this summer ended when he was waived/injured last week as part of an effort to reduce the 53-player limit.

Brooks practiced after being placed in concussion protocol following a hit he suffered during a preseason victory over the Washington Commanders, several plays after he made a 59-yard run.

After arriving as a 2023 free agent out of BYU, Brooks showed intriguing potential early on and brought the size that was missing from the Dolphins’ quarterback corps.

Brooks made the 53-man roster last year, and while his playing time was limited, he did have a 52-yard run in Week 3’s historic win over the Denver Broncos and a 28-yard run in Week 6’s win over the Carolina Panthers.

But he injured his leg in that game against Carolina, which landed him on injured reserve. The Dolphins valued him enough to call him back, and he played in three more games toward the end, although he had only three rushing attempts.

The addition of fourth-round rookie Jaylen Wright made Brooks’ task of putting together a roster much more difficult, especially considering veteran Jeff Wilson Jr. had a strong training camp.

The Dolphins signed defensive end Derrick McLendon to the practice squad on Tuesday, a move that comes after two other young defensive backs participated in tryouts.

According to an NFL reporter, Ty Shelby and Justin Blazek also trained for the Dolphins.

Shelby appeared in one game with the LA Chargers last season, when he was on and off the practice squad. Blazek spent training camp with the Cincinnati Bengals after signing as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin-Platteville.
